This framework is based on trauma-informed principles and knowledge. This framework is intentionally designed to teach and to shape the individual’s behaviour within consistent limits using non-blaming, non-shaming and empowering communication. This trauma-informed framework of support also encourages discussing consequences that are clearly connected to the individual’s behaviour, yet also uses words that encourage thinking and the development of insight whilst preserving relational connections and attunement. This creative and printable board game has been developed to provide a foundation which explores a vital executive functioning skill - self-control and impulse control. “Let’s Pause” is a growth mindset board game which is great for students who may struggle to think before they act, who present with difficulties associated with ADHD or students who could benefit from considering the consequences of their actions. Using the analogy of a “remote control” students are asked to reflect on their behaviour and the impact when they can -“pause and stop” and think about their behaviour -“fast forward” where impulses take over -“play” when you can just keep going -“rewind” when they can take a step back after our impulses have got the better of us and think about the consequences. Sandwich ingredients represent the various strategies to support the student to calm down. The following strategies are included: bounding on a ball, playing with play-doh, counting to 10, writing down thoughts, listening to music, stretching, quiet time, drawing, reading, going for a walk, meditation, hugging a favourite toy, having a drink and thinking happy thoughts. There are blank copies of the ingredients for students to write down some calming strategies that they like to use. Laminate and use white board markers for students to write their own calm-down strategies to create their own unique calm down sandwich. This is great for a lunch time individual or group therapy intervention.
